Directed by Thomas Bradac, this production showcased the theatre department’s students’ talents.

This production of Macbeth is set in “Scotland, somewhere in the near future.” The empty theatre set alone gave me chills as I took my seat. A metal framework laced with long chains created dark crevices and multiple levels on the stage. The set itself just looked tortured.
Every inch of that framework was used throughout the play.

The first scene of the play set the mood for the rest of the play for me and fellow theater goers. An audience member said: “I love[d] the opening, and after that,
I was intrigued and wanted more.”

The dark and enticingly tragic atmosphere was accompanied by a captive audience. You could hear the collective audience gasps at points of intrigue during the play.
A definite attempt to modernize the “weird sisters” was not lost to me. The wardrobe and makeup gave the sisters a beautiful and repulsive side, literally. Perhaps inherent in our modern concept of evil, the sisters were adorned with tattered glittery garb and make up that gave half their face a youthful expression and the other half a haggard, time worn appearance. The sisters played by, Malia Wright, Katie Gunderson, and Nicole Javier were exceptional and really became a strong thread throughout the play.

The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, played by Chris Voss and Kelly Rogers, respectively, was fascinating. I really felt their mutual passionate attraction and repulsion. An audience member remarked that they loved Lady Macbeth: “everything from her acting style to her look was intriguing...Very powerful!”

A fantastic turn out for the opening weekend bodes well for this production of Macbeth. With such incredible talent I look forward to the theatre department’s next production: Picasso at the Lapin Agile March 17-19, 24-26.

For more information about Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts visit www.chapman.edu/copa.
For tickets to future productions call 714-997-6519 or email CoPA@chapman.edu.

J. I even saw a little girl, no more than five years old, swaying to the rhythms of the jazz combo.
A very inclusive Big Band included two bass players and two drummers. I was thrilled to see that this semester, the big band also boasted flautist, Bella Staav. While flute is not completely out of place in a big band setting, I believe it showed the enthusiasm and diversity of the program to feature a dedicated flautist.

From the Jazz Combo’s rendition of Sweet Honey Bee composed by Lee Morgan to the Big Band’s final number, Getaway composed by Earth, Wind, and Fire I thought that the show was a delightful showcase of talented students. One audience member I spoke with said, “I thought it was really good this semester. The best it has been in a long time!” This audience member has been coming to see the Big Band and Jazz Concert for five years now!

With such great talent I look forward to the next semester’s production from Chapman University’s Big Band and Jazz Combo on April 26th. Mark your calendars!
Did you like this performance? This event celebrates the hard work of all of its graduating students. All senior projects are evaluated and nominated by the faculty-awards range from Best Picture to Best Advertising Campaign to Acheivement in Animation.

Parents, students and staff all break out their stylish evening attire for the event. It truly feels like you are at a award show in Hollywood as you walk down the red carpet into the theater. During the show, the audience gets to see clips and stills of all the nominee's projects, as well has hear advice from their favorite professors. The event ends with a elegant after party filled with food, fun and dancing.

The Cecil Awards is completly ran and organized by students, which gives them the experience of planning a real awards show. Students from all disciplines pull their skills together to make a successful event. Whether is promoting the event, designing the stage or organizing the after party, the student committee works hard all semester to create a memorable event for the graduating students. Our students have been all over the world making movies, and showcasing their films to foreign audiences. We have had many industry guests come talk to students about what it is like out in the “real world”. Faculty members have been working on projects and even enlisting student help! Check out the many exciting opportunities our students have had since 2010 started:

We launched the campaign in January for the next film building we are hoping to add. This building will feature more sound stages, classrooms, editing areas and even another theater.

Students in the Digital Art program took a trip to San Francisco to visit Pixar Studios. They got to see how their ideas started as sketch, and evolved into characters we all know and love.

A group of documentary students travelled to Machu Picchu over interterm. These students experienced the culture of the people there, and are able to tell their story through a heart-felt film.

Several Public Relations and Advertising students are working on a campaign for the 2010 Census, as part of a national competition. Eleven students came on the trip, including two Ph.D. candidates, 6 Ed.S. in School Psychology students, and 3 undergraduates. Our journey began in Santiago Atitlan, a small town on the shores of beautiful lake Atitlan. In this community, we worked with local students at a children's library, La Puerta Abierta. This agency was created by Amanda Flayer Chif, a native Californian who moved down to Guatemala while in the Peace Corps, and never left. She was an amazing inspiration for our group, as were the adorable, energetic, and enthusiastic students we interacted with.

The second stop on our adventure was La Antigua, a gorgeous and well preserve d colonial town that was once the capital of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Here, our students moved in with local host families, and attended Spanish language lessons at La Union. This school was fantastic- they were friendly and welcoming, while also providing extremely challenging Spanish instruction. Our students received four hours per day of private (one-on-one) instruction, and their Spanish skills improved remarkably as a result. During our stay in Antigua, we also worked at a rural community school, El Jardin de Amor. This school was established to serve children in an impoverished area who would not otherwise receive an education. We worked with the students in their classrooms and on a field trip, and also helped to improve the grounds by painting the walls and adding in bright, colorful murals. Working in this setting was a humbling and eye-opening experience for our group. While in Antigua, we also took a field trip to the Paca ya volcano, and hiked (or went on horseback) to the top to see the lava. At the top, above cloud level, we watched red lava rocks tumble down toward us, and ate marshmallows roasted from the heat.

Our trip concluded with a trip to Tikal, in the northern and rural part of Guatemala. We stayed within the national park boundaries, deep in the jungle, and visited three different Mayan archeological sites (Tikal, Yaxa-Topoxte, and Ceibal). We climbed to the top of over 200-foot high temples, hiked through steamy jungles, took an authentic "jungle cruise", and toured the forest canopy via zipline. We had some amazing animal sightings while in the region, including spider monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, a jaguar, and a tarantuala that was truly zoo-worthy. This was an amazing experience for our group, and the best way to fully comprehend the amazing Mayan history, culture, and accomplishments.

In all, this was a successful trip that we hope is the first of many. Our students had a wonderful time, and were exposed to so many unique, meaningful, and life-changing experiences. Additionally, as instructors we were incredibly proud of their maturity, responsibility, bravery, and willingness to leap outside their comfort zones in order to savor the best of this opportunity.

From student, Tina Byington: "Guatemala was an amazing experience in so many ways! I did things that I never would have thought possible, pushed myself to limits that I never considered reaching as an individual, and had some of my best college experiences while on this trip! I was lucky to get to share this trip with two girls that I was very close with and we created a bond that we will share forever! I am so glad that I was able to go to Guatemala and learn all that I did. It really opened my eyes to what the world is like outside of my comfort zone and helped me to realize just how lucky I am and how to help those who are less fortunate than myself!”

Founder and President of TOMS Shoes Will Visit Chapman

Sent on behalf of P. Well, thanks to Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences you can do just that (well sort of - keep reading).
With its new 2009-2010 series, "A Night With ..." Wilkinson College is offering a chance to visit with three distinctly different and influential thinkers: Joseph Conrad (pictured left), Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Judas Iscariot. A Chapman faculty member will "become" each character.

"The idea came from the need to blend intellectual pursuit with entertainment value," said Dean of Wilkinson College Patrick Quinn. "'The Night With ...' series is an attempt to give people an insight into important writers, artists and thinkers by academics who have spent years of their lives knowing their subjects and their works. At the same time we want the audience to enjoy the journey. In a larger sense, we want to show everyone that the work we do in the liberal arts is germane to the world we inhabit and gives us insight to the human condition."

First up was Dr. Richard Ruppel, professor of English, who on Nov. 3 in front of more than 200 audience members (a combination of students, faculty, staff and the local community), portrayed author Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent), complete with bowler hat and suit.

Dr. Ruppel, president of the Joseph Conrad Society of America and who is helping organize an international Joseph Conrad Conference at Chapman on Jan. 7-10, found his job a little bit daunting.

"It's difficult pretending to be such an important literary figure," he said, and notes that he is not an actor. But Dr. Ruppel is a scholar and expert on Conrad, an author who has been called racist, sexist, Eurocentric, anti-Semitic. But in the same breath, Conrad is also recognized for his uncanny visions of the 20th century that include the U.S. role as a dominant economic power to the burst of advertising and world of the overpowering international corporation to terrorism.

To read an article by Dr. Ruppel on "Why Conrad Still Matters" click here.

Next up ... Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Robert Slayton, Ph.D., professor of history) on February 8, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Wallace All Faiths Chapel and then on April 6, 2010 -- Judas Iscariot (Marvin Meyer, Ph.D., director of the Schweitzer Institute and Griset Professor of Bible and Christian Studies) at 7 p.m. at the Wallace All Faiths Chapel.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chapmandepartment.blogspot.com/2009/12/night-with-some-of-historys-important.html' title='A Night With ... This is one of the busiest time of the year for us as we recently presented the 28th Annual American Celebration, a staged live song-and-dance show starring Chapman students. This two night extravaganza is the university’s major fundraiser directly benefiting student scholarships. This year, over $2.2 million was raised!

American Celebration is a fully produced show with costumes, scenery, lights and a professional orchestra. Auditions occur the first week of the fall semester and are open to students of all disciplines and majors. It is a non-stop thrill ride of fun and hard work!

In just three short weeks, students learn music, choreography and staging and perform in front of a live audience! It’s a lot of work in addition to classes and regular school work but well worth it!

It is one of the most collaborative events at the university with over 100 students participating on and offstage. The celebration and alumni networking social will be the first of its kind in the history of the Athletic Training Education Program. I anticipate this event will be memorable and lay the ground work for future networking and recognition programs. I encourage each of you to attend and celebrate. I want to also propose an opportunity to be recognized yourself. We are in the process of confirming Monte Smith’s attendance for this special event. We will also be unveiling the much anticipated “Wall of Fame” in recognition of Monte Smith as the Founding Father of the ATEP. The Wall of Fame will include an individual plaque of each alumni who successfully passed the Board of Certification, Inc. examination upon completion of course work at Chapman (College) University. There are costs involved with the Wall of Fame and plaques. We also have a Monte Smith Endowment Fund established providing appropriate assistance to current ATEP students in need, in particular, with the ATEP’s study abroad courses. We are seeking $250.00 donations to off-set the costs of the plaques for the “Wall of Fame” as well as the Monte Smith Endowment Fund.

You will be recognized for your donation on November 18th at the celebration as a “Founding Friend” for the Wall of Fame towards our Founding Father – Monte Smith…. in his presence!

In addition, all current junior and senior AT students will have the opportunity to network with certified athletic trainers from the professional, university, community college, high school athletic training ranks, along w/ alumni who have been successful in establishing their own sports medicine clinics and other entrepreneurial opportunities. Please join us on November 18th and share your story with current AT students.

For more information about ATEP, click here...

Integrated Educational Studies

Wednesday evening, September 23rd was an exciting night for the CES. This night we met with 23 students (out of 37 total) who are majoring in Integrated Educational Studies, a brand new undergraduate major within the College of Educational Studies. Our main focus at this orientation was to explain the requirements for this major, especially the requirements to begin their fieldwork hours. Other documents that we discussed were the fieldwork folder, the IES student handbook, and course map. The most memorable part of the evening was when our own CES dean, Dr. Don Cardinal, spoke about the excitement he feels for the beginnings of this new major. He was extremely thrilled and honored to see so many faces involved in IES after many years of preparation.

Current IES student, Chelsae, writes: This is my 1st year at Chapman and my major is IES in schools. My experiences so far in the IES program have been very positive. My advisors and professors are all very excited and dedicated to this program and are very responsive to any questions I have. The material I'm learning is very interesting and thought provoking and the professors are extremely knowledgeable, even being that this is the first time they have taught these courses. I fully expect the IES program and my IES degree to help make me a very qualified and well rounded Special Education teacher.

For more information about IES, click here...

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Chapman University and the College of Educational Studies are proud to announce its first graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders! My name is Lauren Hertel and I work for the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts here at Chapman University. With our semester in full swing this week, I thought I would share one of my favorite classes/opportunities we offer every semester for our students.

Here at Dodge, we have two industry professionals that come and screen movies they have worked on for our students once-a-week. It is class our students can take as an elective, or just come in and watch each week.

On Tuesday night, our students had their first encounter with Tony Bill, one of our Filmmakers-In-Residence this Fall. Tony Bill is an an acclaimed writer, director, producer, actor (you name it, he has done it). This first film he chose to show was My Bodyguard, a film that he directed. It was a very interesting movie that gave a unique perspective of bodyguards and their relationship with the people they work to protect. The Q&A session after the screening was very insightful as to the challenges directors face on a daily basis working on a set.

These screenings also include a dinner that students can sign up to attend. This gives current students the chance to have a more intimate conversation with the filmmaker, and really get a chance to learn about the industry from someone that has been in it for years. Many times our filmmakers-in-residence will also bring a guest that also worked on the films.

Our Filmmakers-In-Residence (FIR) also mentor 20 students during the semester. Students are chosen based on an application process, and they meet with the FIR every other week about a current project. Often times this relationship extends past the semester, and many students form close ties to the professional they worked with (yes students have gotten jobs from this program!).

This is just one example of special opportunities our students have here at Dodge. It is really fun to watch our students actually get to meet people that they have admired for years, and it helps them to learn how the world of film works from the experts.

If you are local, you are welcome to come to these screenings! Check our website for specific times/dates. Just recently WCHSS Dean Patrick Quinn received an email/letter from a student that truly explained what a remarkable school Chapman University is and how it gives students amazing opportunities in all areas campus-wide.

Here is what that student, a sophomore film productions major, had to say about a liberal arts class he took in the Communications Department of Wilkinson College.

“As a sophomore, I have been fortunate enough to have experienced some of the most amazing programs and classes at Chapman. I am extremely grateful, however, for having the opportunity to take a course called Intercultural Communications with Nicole Simons. This class focused on race, class, and gender issues in modern day culture. This course was without question the best taught class I have EVER attended. Nicole created an environment where everyone felt comfortable speaking and she was able to really have students think critically about material. It was a true example of kids working, not for a grade, but because she made us want to learn. Every student in that class was passionate about the material and they were all clear leaders and exceptional individuals. Every day my mind was opened to new ideas and I have grown as a person because of her class and the students who attended it.”

This particular student also spent his first two weeks of summer in Cameroon filming a documentary about an organization called CED, “a truly life changing experience,” he says.

It’s the faculty, courses and programs, like traveling to Cameroon filming a documentary, is what makes Chapman so unique.
